This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a mindfulness-based music training with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) adolescents in Hong Kong. Using a mixed research method, a crossover randomized controlled trial (RCT) design was employed to evaluate the training outcome. Fifteen ADHD adolescents aged 10–14 were randomly assigned into either immediate training group (n=7) or wait-list control group (n=8). Quantitative outcome measures included a computerized neurocognitive task and parent questionnaire were used to evaluate the 4-weeks mindfulness-based music training. Qualitative data enhanced our understanding on the effectiveness of the current training and how mindfulness-based intervention and music therapy could be integrated together. Result indicated that ADHD adolescents after received the training demonstrated improvement on the conflict monitoring and ADHD symptoms. The gain in improving conflict monitoring was maintained 1-month after the completion of training. Our preliminary finding indicated mindfulness-based music training is a feasible and effective training for ADHD adolescents in Hong Kong. Our study provided an innovative line of thinking on mindfulness-based intervention and a solution to the problem of the static nature in mindfulness practice for ADHD adolescents. Further RCT study with a larger sample size is needed to support this initial exciting finding. |
