Group Rapid Transit (GRT) is a new idea of public transport using small automated railed vehicles to provide shared ride for grouped passengers. However, only few systems have been proposed in the real world with lack of materials supporting the idea. Based on hardware model, computer simulations and mathematical calculations, the theoretical behaviors and system characteristics of the GRT, and how it can contributes to the future development of intelligent transportation system, are investigated. The author found that the GRT outweighs the other existing systems by higher flexibility, efficiency and better energy utilization in fulfilling both peak and off-peak capacity, with improved ridership experience on access time and safety. In a future smart city, public transport can be completely detached from the private transport with the wide deployment of GRT. |
